Zak Schwartz

A TV writer for nearly 15 years now, Zak hopes to pass along all the mistakes he’s made.

Zak SchwartzZak grew up in a TV household. The son of a television writer. This is the only life he knows.

He graduated from Tulane University in New Orleans and immediately returned home to Los Angeles to begin a career in television… as an assistant. Moving from PA, to Showrunner’s Assistant, to Script Coordinator, and eventually to Writers’ Assistant.

He got his break in 2009 when he was accepted into the Warner Brothers Writers’ Workshop. The program led to a staff writer position on the action drama Human Target (Fox). From there Zak went on to write for Covert Affairs (USA), Person of Interest (CBS), Counterpart (STARZ), Patriot (Amazon), Taken (NBC), Wu-Tang: An American Saga (Hulu), Snowpiercer (TNT), and Gen Z (Amazon).

Over the years he has sold pilots to USA, CBS, NBC, and FOX. Most recently, he served as Co-Executive Producer for The Mighty Nein (Amazon), an animated hour-drama.

Zak lives in LA with his wife and two children. He is represented by CAA and Literate Management.

I LOVED having Zak as my instructor for class. His professional writing experience was exactly what I hoped for when signing up for a Script Anatomy class. He had lots of anecdotes and advice based on real world situations and I found that invaluable. Zak’s attitude fostered an environment that really helped me feel comfortable taking risks and pitching ideas not only for my concepts but for others in the class as well. I looked forward to going to class because I knew Zak would be teaching it and I would learn interesting and applicable things for my nascent writing career. Zak’s feedback was great! During class Zak fostered an inclusive and exciting discussion about everyone’ screenplays. I felt like Zak provided timely and helpful feedback whenever I reached out to him. He made an effort to remain available for questions the entire class. 10/10 I would take a Zak Schwartz class again.

Zak leveled the playing field by focusing immediately on the principles of great writing and the tools, templates and intuitive guidelines of Script Anatomy. His honest, positive feedback and professional expertise got us through our drafts. We could not have written our pilot without him or without the GREAT camaraderie he helped create. It was thrilling to see everyone’s stories take shape over the course of our time together and to read final drafts. Zak made himself available to questions and sometimes mine were pretty basic – he never made me feel bad about this. He created a feeling of safety in our class and I could see how this might go sideways in an intense writing environment with a bunch of strangers exploring core wounds and digging into intense material. Zak is clearly at the top of his field and he is a generous, exceptional teacher. Anyone who studies with Zak is lucky.

Zak was knowledgeable and encouraging. He kept the class motivated with positive feedback to keep going. Most of us finished our scripts and felt very productive from taking the class. I would recommend Zak’s class!
