Character
COST: $95
Unforgettable character work can make an exec buy a pitch in the room, persuade an actor to take the role, and make an audience tune in each week. That’s why creating a unique, complex and compelling character to anchor your television series or feature may be the most important thing to focus on when developing a pitch or writing a pilot/spec.
In this workshop, Ali Vingiano a WGA Award nominated writer from The Morning Show (Apple) and The Opposition with Jordan Klepper (Comedy Central) will show you how to create memorable, active characters with strong needs, wants, motivation and drive so that audiences invest in their journey.

Fact vs. Fiction When Navigating a Screenwriting Career
FEATURING: Tawnya Bhattacharya and Lee Jessup

Writing is just one part of being a working screenwriter. But what about getting representation and managing those relationships? Networking and navigating social media? Do you need to move to LA? Should you focus on personal material first? Expect a frank conversation between two people who really know this business, with time for questions of course!
The host, Tawnya, is the founder of Script Anatomy and currently the Co-EP on Bel Air (Peacock). Lee Jessup is a leading career coach for screenwriters. The author of Breaking In: Tales from the Screenwriting Trenches from Focal Press and Getting It Write: An Insider’s Guide To A Screenwriting Career, her clients have sold feature specs, original pilots and pitches to major studios. She is also a consultant for NBC International’s sales team, as well as a mentor for the Universal Writers Program.

TV Structure Bootcamp
COST: $95
In this workshop you’ll learn how to break story and come up with all the scenes for an episode or feature by focusing on the beats of the story, not the details. You’ll see the cheat sheet for structure that professional writers use.
Omaira has written for Station 19 (ABC) and East Los High (Hulu), Victor and Valentino (Cartoon Network) and two STARZ mini rooms for Family Crimes created by David Ayer.

Scene & Dialogue

Expect a fast pace, and lots of video clips as case studies, as Spiro shows you how these techniques have been applied to great effect in the shows and movies we’re all familiar with.
Spiro has written for Arrow (CW), Grimm (NBC), he’s sold three pilots, and currently has several projects set up with producers.

ANATOMY OF A PILOT: HACKS (COMEDY)

[This is one of two Pilot Breakdowns running concurrently, one comedy and one drama. Pick the one that suits your genre.]
Hacks is a brilliant half hour comedy. So join us as Howie Kremer, a writer and producer, currently working with Judd Apatow, breaks down the pilot episode scene by scene!
We’ll watch the show in increments, pausing along the way to analyze the writing in the light of the workshops you’ve already attended in this festival—the character introductions, the scene and dialogue work, the way that it’s structured. Howie will share a comedy writer’s perspective on the many choices that were made in this show, such as how jokes emerge from character, how flaws are exhibited and conflicts seeded for future episodes.
Ultimately, he will demonstrate how Script Anatomy’s writing tools apply to this hit show, as they can for your pilot too!

ANATOMY OF A PILOT: THE OLD MAN (DRAMA)
COST: $95
The pilot for The Old Man (Hulu) is one of the most compelling in recent years. Join us as Margaux Froley, former Director of Development for MTV Networks, breaks down the episode scene by scene!
We’ll watch the show together and pause along the way to analyze the script in the light of the workshops you’ve already attended in this festival—the way that characters are introduced and their stage of life is established, the scene and dialogue work, the structure, and how conflicts and questions are seeded for future episodes. Margaux will illustrate how the writers created incredible tension and suspense, how they wrote towards clear themes and, ultimately, how you too can create similarly resonant work by using Script Anatomy’s writing tools which apply so clearly in this case.
Margaux has written two Lifetime MOWs, her series of mystery YA books for Random House won an Anthony Award, and she is currently writing a feature film for Octavia Spencer’s company, Orit Entertainment.

SHOWRUNNER INTERVIEW—TJ BRADY & RASHEED NEWSON

You don’t want to miss this! The host, Tawnya, will be talking to TJ Brady and Rasheed Newson, the writing team and co-show runners of Peacock’s #1 show Bel Air.
They’ll talk about breaking in, and coming up on a wide range of show including The Chi, Shooter, Animal Kingdom and Narcos. TJ started out in the army, and then the corporate world where he took writing courses by night, before breaking into the business with Rasheed on Fox’s Lie To Me. Rasheed went from a communications job in DC, writing speeches, to spending six years in LA as an assistant to TV executives before getting staffed. Rasheed’s latest novel My Government Means To Kill Me, is on everyone’s list as one of the hottest books of 2022.
This is a writing team that has paid their dues, earned their chops and successfully navigated a constantly changing industry. If you came to our showrunner panel last year you know to expect a lively, no bullshit conversation. So come with questions!
