From Support Staff to Staff Writer 2024

If you’ve ever wondered how to break into TV writing then this is absolutely one of the answers.

Writers’ Assistants, Script Coordinators and Showrunners’ Assistants are not only the unsung heroes who help bring your favorite TV shows to life, they’re also a great stepping stone towards a career as a screenwriter in TV.

In this lively panel discussion, we’ll explain what roles they play in the writers’ room with the help of current assistants and recently staffed writers, who have emerged from these trenches. And, yes, we’ll talk about how to break into TVt!

Join us, and bring your questions. It will help you on your own path towards success as a TV writer.

Moderated by Instructor: Jackie Penn – who worked in various support staff positions (office PA, line producer’s assistant, writers’ production assistant and writers’ assistant) on shows such as The Catch (ABC), For the People (ABC), The Fix (ABC), Siren (Freeform) and Ginny & Georgia (Netflix). And also ran events for Script Anatomy for a while.  In 2020, Jackie was staffed on TURNER & HOOCH (Disney +) after a showrunner’s assistant found her sample on a networking website. She was most recently a story editor on the CW’s 4400. She was selected for Coverfly’s 2023 Next List, is currently a member of the Rideback Rise Circle cohort, and serves as one of the leaders of the Awesome Assistants of Color Facebook Group.



Jen Howell: Jen got her start as the Sequester Manager on HELL’S KITCHEN, living in a beach house with the losing contestants, before becoming a story producer there. She then transitioned into scripted, where she worked as support staff on shows like ARRESTED DEVELOPMENT, TRANSPARENT, and a handful of multicam sitcoms. Her blog,100 Dates—a chronicle of her adventures on (you guessed it!) one-hundred dates—led to her first development experience, with Bowen & Sons, Julie Bowen’s production company. Jen has since written episodes of BABY DADDY (Freeform), THE GREAT INDOORS (CBS), and LOPEZ VS LOPEZ (NBC). She is currently on TULSA KING for Paramount+.

Jewels Smith: Jewels landed her first writers’ room years later, thanks to a TV writer who remembered her from a networking event. She was elated to become a… writers’ production assistant. She has since worked in numerous support staff roles – from writers’ production assistant to script coordinator – for shows across multiple streaming networks. She co-wrote on Netflix’s BOO BITCH

Joe Carroll: Joe is an award-winning filmmaker and screenwriter from Nashville, Tennessee, having recently written and directed BET+ thriller LETHAL LEGACY. After making national news for crashing a Marvel red carpet impersonating comedian Hannibal Buress, Carroll signed his first studio deal with CBS Studios as a Co-Ep for SUGAR MAMAS, co-created the award-winning Amazon series MS. INCORPORATED, and has since served on the writing staff for BEL-AIR, THE CHI, and THE RESIDENT.

Dan Fuchs – is a genre writer who started his work in writers’ rooms as a WPA On The Man In the High Castle Season 3After being promoted to Writers’ Assistant for the fourth season of High Castle, he went on to work as a Writers’ Assistant on The Good Lord Bird and Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan and Script Coordinator on Home Before Dark and The Penguin.
