TV Pilot Lab (Drama)

This class is your inside look into how professional writers tackle the pilot writing process.

The TV Drama Pilot Lab is a 6-week intensive course that requires some prep before class begins. Using Script Anatomy tools, you will develop, outline, and write your TV drama pilot at a pace expected in the TV industry.

You’ll hang your story beats on the board and pitch it out to the class — the way it’s done in a professional writers room. At every stage of the process, you will work the Script Anatomy tools and receive feedback and notes from the instructor and classmates.

Along the way, you’ll be privy to candid answers about the business such as breaking in, managing your representation, and finding your voice — all from a working writer!

This class is designed to prepare you for your first job writing for TV. The experience is invaluable and continues to be a popular course with writers of all levels — including writers who have gone on to staff but return to the course for deadlines and feedback. Students are required to devote time to homework, writing, and reading other classmates’ work to provide feedback. They are expected to actively participate in the development and story breaking process. In a professional writers room, you must participate if you want to keep your job! Working this muscle will benefit you and set you apart from others.

Using AI tools to generate scenes, dialogue, or structure in place of your own work undermines the purpose of the program and is highly discouraged.

Other writers’ material: As a reminder, everything shared in this room, scripts, pitches, and personal shares, falls under the “cone of silence” category and is also considered someone’s original work and IP (intellectual property). Please don’t run anyone else’s material through ChatGPT, Claude, Sudowrite, or any other AI tool. Writers in this industry are understandably protective of their work, and we treat that seriously.
