Oct 4 to Nov 8 — Sundays, 10:00am-1:00pm (PT)

Instructor: Ross Lazar

This is the course upon which your terrifying horror spec will be built. Horror Feature Development Lab will take you from horror concept to outline over 5 weeks by applying Script Anatomy’s tools. Suitable for new and experienced writers both.

Each week, you will learn a new writing tool, and then receive a corresponding assignment in which you apply it to your own project. You will also give and receive weekly feedback, from your instructor and your peers, providing you with an honest evaluation of your material in a dynamic and supportive environment.

Expect to work hard, this is an intensive course. Your instructor will share their experience on breaking into the business, navigating pitfalls, and selling a horror script. If you’re trying to develop that dynamic horror spec, this is the place to start.

Classes cover: Hooks, Scares, Horror Mythology along with fundamental screenwriting tools such as: Story Structure, Three-Act Structure, Character Development, Dynamic Relationships, Transformational Arcs, Stakes and Conflict, Dilemma, Theme and more. What you’ll learn here will not only help you create a game-changing horror franchise, but also help you sustain a career.

Testimonial:I was super impressed by how deep Ross jumped into each writer’s story and saw what it was trying to do, regardless of subject matter or genre. He helped me crack an idea I’ve been bouncing around for years by helping me find my core themes and building from there. His understanding of what makes stories work is just really impressive. And more than anything, Ross is just a super pleasant and positive guy which encouraged an environment of sharing and collaboration. Great stuff.— Erik Blair

INSTRUCTOR DISCLAIMER: Since all of Script Anatomy’s instructors are working writers, opportunities sometimes arise in their careers that prohibit them from teaching. AI USE POLICY: Script Anatomy is a craft-based screenwriting program. Our work here is built on the belief that writing is a skill developed through practice, feedback, and revision, not something that can be outsourced.

Your own material: While we know some writers use AI tools for researching and brainstorming, we ask that the scripts and pages you bring to class represent your own writing and creative decisions. Using AI tools to generate scenes, dialogue, or structure in place of your own work undermines the purpose of the program and is highly discouraged.

Other writers’ material: As a reminder, everything shared in this room, scripts, pitches, and personal shares, falls under the “cone of silence” category and is also considered someone’s original work and IP (intellectual property). Please don’t run anyone else’s material through ChatGPT, Claude, Sudowrite, or any other AI tool. Writers in this industry are understandably protective of their work, and we treat that seriously.

Please note that classes are for individuals aged 18 and older.
