Feature Development Lab
Apr 14 to May 19 — Sundays, 10:00am-1:00pm (PDT)
Instructor: Scott Barkan
Feature Development Lab is the course upon which all of our feature writing courses are built. You will go from concept to outline over 5 weeks by applying Script Anatomy’s tools. Suitable for new and experienced writers both.
Each week, you will learn a new writing tool, and then receive a corresponding assignment in which you apply it to your own project. You will also give and receive weekly feedback, from your instructor and your peers, providing you with an honest evaluation of your material in a dynamic and supportive environment.
If you’re new to Script Anatomy, and serious about your feature, this is the place to start. But expect to work hard, this is an intensive course. What you’ll learn here will sustain you throughout your career.
Classes cover: Brainstorming Your Concept / Logline / “Elevator Pitch” / Creating Compelling Characters / Stakes and Conflict / Dynamic Relationships / Analyzing Three Act Structure / Outline / Theme / Transformational Arc / Set-pieces / Cinematic Imagery
Testimonial: “I loved the class. Scott was really great at explaining elements of film structure that I had never truly grasped before, despite reading many classic screenwriting books on my own over the years. This was a really great way to stress test a feature premise, and helped me realize there were some big foundational issues in my concept that needed fixing before getting into a first draft. Scott is a really smart instructor, has a pretty encyclopedic memory of classic films and their major beats, and was really positive and encouraging to all of us. Definitely recommend this class and Scott Barkan as an instructor!” — Scott Ross
