TV Structure Lab (Comedy)
Jul 28 to Sep 15 — Wednesdays, 7pm – 10pm (PDT)
Instructor: Howie Kremer
To “break story” means coming up with all the scenes—or beats—for your episode, and then pitching those beats on the board, while the rest of the room weighs in with fixes and solutions for story problems.
TV Structure Lab mimics that process, but for your pilot. You’ll learn to troubleshoot a story that isn’t working, and you’ll get feedback on how you pitch ideas and conduct yourself in a room. You’ll also have six other writers help with story structure.
This lab is an invaluable preparation for life as a TV writer. You would never build a house without proper blue prints. Pilot writing is no different. In Sasha Feiler’s testimonial video, the Adult Swim writer calls it “the best TV writing class I’ve ever taken.”
Howie Kremer was a staff writer on POP TV’s Let’s Get Physical and IFC’s Gigi Does it. He has written jokes for a new game show called The Misery Index (TBS), and most recently did a punch-up on Stephen Merchant’s latest feature, Fighting With My Family
Required: At least one Script Anatomy class or equivalent experience with permission.
Testimonial: “I highly enjoyed SA’s class with Howie. I learned so much from him about what the process of a writing room feels like, as well as, the process of what writing a comedy TV pilot entails. Howie was really great at taking each writer’s work and individually comment on it to the point that all of us felt we can use that in our own work.” — Marina Reydler
